Paphiopedilum roots are brown and covered with tiny hairs, which increase the water-absorbing surface several times over. In nature, most Paphiopedilums are lithophytes, growing on rocks and in places where root growth is difficult. Adaptations such as root hairs compensate for the small number of roots.
