Not all mericlones are the same and variants appear proportional to the number produced clones. When the meristematic plant tissue is cut, some cells are cut through and may produce abnormal plantlets.
In ome plants the phenomenon of chimera also occurs, mainly due to disturbances in mitosis in the growth cone.which is associated with spontaneous genetic mutations, including flower color reversion.
Therefore, some varieties, despite mericloning, still show differences in colour (so-called reversions), or sometimes in the shape of flowers (e.g. some produce normally structured flowers, while others produce flowers called ‘peloric’)
